Surprise! Engagement

On May 7th, I did my first surprise engagement photoshoot. But this was not just any surprise engagement shoot, it was a mix up! This couple have been engaged for a while now, but the lady believed it would be fun to ‘propose’ to her fiancé. Of course I was there to take the photos! It was definitely a fun experience, and I am glad to have been involved in it.

To prepare for this shoot, we picked a location closest to the client as she had other events to attend the day of. When researching in and around Oakville/Sauga, I came across Gairloch Gardens. I thought it was beautiful! As this was my first time going to this location, I had to meet up with the client before shoot day so we could determine where “the shot” location would be. I also had to borrow the big 70-200mm lens—that was fun on its own! Once we got the location picked we marked it with an “X” and we were ready for the big day.

When arriving on shoot day, I pretended to be a normal visitor taking some photos of the wildlife. I actually got a little distracted taking photos of some toads in the pond. But then! I saw the woman and her fiancé arrive— I switched in to focus mode. I subtly watched the couple move to the ‘X” area and get into position. I moved away from the pond and closer to the couple, still pretending I was taking photos of the wildlife and surrounding area. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed that she started grabbing in to her purse— I knew this was the moment I came here for! I pointed the camera in their direction and she got down on her knee. I think the fiancé was quite shocked, and even more shocked when she pointed her finger in my direction to show that we caught it on camera! All I remember hearing was, “A little heads up would have been nice” and some giggles to follow.

After that, the fiancé was eager to get into some normal couples photographs. And let me tell you, that couple was all happiness and smiles the whole shoot long— I do not think she stopped smiling once!

This was a fun experience and I think all parties had a great time. I just finished editing the photos from this shoot and can’t wait to share with you all.
